=====================================

In the United Kingdom, the beginning of November is a cold and noisy time. If you are there on November 5th, you will likely see the night sky lit up with bright colors and hear the sound of explosions. This is Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night. It is a very old tradition, as popular as Halloween in some parts of the UK. The celebrations have two main parts: huge bonfires and more fireworks than at any other time of year.

But why do people light fires and set off fireworks? The event remembers a failed plot from 1605. A man named Guy Fawkes, an English Catholic soldier, along with a group of other Catholics, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They wanted to kill King James I because he was treating Catholics unfairly. Guy Fawkes was discovered in the cellar under the building, guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder. It was a plot that almost changed British history, but because it was found just in time, the King’s life was saved.
To celebrate the King's survival, people lit bonfires across London that very night. This tradition continues today. People build giant bonfires and gather around them for warmth. Sometimes, an effigy of Guy Fawkes that people spend days making is placed on top of the fire to be burned, although in modern times this is not so common.

Although the event remembers a dark and violent part of history, today it is a fun social event. Families and friends meet to watch amazing firework displays and eat special Bonfire Night food, such as jacket potatoes cooked in the fire, and a sticky ginger cake called parkin which is popular in the north of England. Although Guy Fawkes himself failed, his story is more famous today than ever, thanks to this unique celebration.
