The U.K., despite its many rich and significant cultural contributions to the world, has never shaken off the stereotype of having terrible food. As a native Brit, I can confirm that most of this criticism is indeed highly warranted (especially my cooking!). However, there is a place that breaks these negative stereotypes, a place where one can marvel at the flakiest pastries and sweetest cakes, a place where one can enjoy the best of British cuisine in a casual environment at a reasonable price...Greggs.
Greggs is a British bakery chain originating from Newcastle Upon Tyne. Greggs specialises in rolls, bakes and sandwiches, as well as doughnuts, slices and cakes. Greggs also offers a wide selection of teas and coffees, juices and soft drinks. To get the best price, Greggs offers a “meal deal,” which allows one to enjoy a mix of sweet and savoury food items in combination with a drink at a special price. Thanks to such offers, Greggs recently overtook McDonalds as the U.K.’s favourite breakfast fast-food spot.
When I go to Greggs, I usually order the most popular item on the menu, a sausage roll. Have you ever tried a sausage roll? A sausage roll is a pork sausage that is wrapped in flaky pastry. I can eat about four! I also may order a steak bake. A steak bake is a puff pastry that is filled with diced beef and gravy. If I go for breakfast, I like to order a breakfast roll deal, which includes a bacon roll and tea for about £3.00. If I fancy a sweet item, I usually order the gingerbread man cookie. It is delicious!
Going to Greggs makes me happy because I can enjoy the best of British cuisine all in one place. If you ever go to the U.K. and want to experience authentic British food, please go to Greggs!
