Australia has many types of football in winter. One of the most popular is Australian Rules Football, also called AFL or Aussie Rules.
Two teams play AFL on a large oval field with an oval-shaped ball. The main goal is to score points by kicking the ball between the opponent’s goalposts. Kicking the ball between the two taller, central posts gives you 6 points (a goal). Kicking the ball between the shorter posts on the outside gives you 1 point (a behind). The game is very fast and every player has to run a lot.

AFL is famous for its high energy, acrobatic catches (called a 'mark'), and physical play. It has parts of soccer, rugby, and basketball. Watching it is really exciting. Please go and watch it when you travel to Australia!
